Why doesn’t our imp have its leg crossed?

The Lincoln Imporium is more than just a shop—it’s a journey into Lincoln’s rich history and folklore. Inspired by the legend of the Lincoln Imp, we’ve brought to life the tales of mischief and mystery.

As the home of The Ancient Order of Fabled Imp Catchers, we invite visitors to rehome handcrafted imps and become part of a centuries-old story that intertwines with the city’s heritage.

We are frequently asked why our imp doesn’t have its leg crossed like the one in Lincoln Cathedral. The short answer is: because it’s not the same imp.

The slightly longer answer is that, according to the folklore of the Lincoln Imp, there were two imps—one that was frozen in place by an angel for causing mischief (the one still in the Cathedral with its leg crossed) and one that escaped. Our story follows the imp that got away, and it is in this second imp’s likeness that our imps are created.
